Great denim for the masses.
My last trip to LA was weird in that I packed both pairs of jeans pictured above, from The Hundreds and Mishka NYC, which I thought were pretty well-known street-wear brands. But everywhere I went, people were all like, “Wow, those are great jeans. Who makes them?” Well, I do agree they are great jeans, but you would think that someone as astute as a Barney’s of Beverly Hills men’s clothing salesman would know where to get good cheap Selvage Denim*. But maybe I’m more fashion forward than I thought. Anyway, buy away people. There is great stuff out there, at good prices, but you ain’t gonna find jack at the local mall. On-line. On-line. Must go on-line. Later.
*From Mishka NYC:
“The Alexei uses some of the highest quality 12.5 oz Japanese Selvage denim you can get your hands on! Seriously we’re not exaggerating here, you’d be floored to know who else uses this same stuff! It is woven on the same vintage shuttle looms used until the 1960s for most U.S. produced denim. Our primary goal when creating these jeans was to replicate the durable unwashed denim of yesteryear, which had been unfortunately abandoned to make way for more economical lower grade denim. While more time consuming and less economical, using these vintage shuttle looms creates a tighter weave that results in a heavier, more durable and overall higher quality denim.
The selvage refers to the natural clean edge of the denim that prevents unraveling. The selvage seam is most obvious on the outer seam of the jeans, visible when cuffed and rolled up. Unlike a lower grade denim, a selvage edge will not fray, guaranteeing you longer life and more wear & tear out of your Jeans!
Since these are raw (meaning they are unwashed) we also recommend not washing them right away! Wear them to loosen them up, and continue wearing them for a few weeks or for optimal fading, 6 months, before washing them. When you decide to wash our raw denim we recommend only a light rinse in cold water to loosen some of the color around the whiskering that will bring out the unique flavor you have created with your jeans!”
