U2 came to Texas this Monday night for what I hoped would be a giant cultural collision between the forces of good and Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas. There were some sparks here and there, but nothing major. About 70,000 people were in attendance, plus about 25,000 security guards. It was, needless to say, a very unruly event. U2 put on its usual great show, perhaps a tad uninspired with too much reliance on old hits rather than newer material. I know a lot of concertgoers prefer this, but I like to see a band stretch its capabilities. Cowboys Stadium itself is very big, but in a word “Souless.” Also, incredibly cheaply built - even the “Luxury Club” to which we were lucky enough to have access looked like Terminal A at DFW, before remodeling. And it is disconcerting to have a standard stadium snack bar in the middle of a “luxury bar” selling hot dogs and popcorn. But what would you expect from Jerry Jones? Tact and taste have never been in his strong points. All in all, a good time, and I’d do it again.
